PORTFOLIO
By painting not only what I see, but also interpreting it in a spiritual sense, I strive to capture the beauty and variations of nature. Magnifying what might easily be overlooked allows me to paint images that may seem familiar, in a new interpretive way. Plant forms are transformed into aesthetic elements of rhythm and form within a space both luminous and elegant. Iwork solely with watercolor because it is an intimate medium. Subtle and delicate nuances can be expressed and light and luminosity in our environment can be captured. I photograph images that intrigue me and then sketch onto the watercolor paper. My technique consists of many small self-contained shapes making up a larger image. This way of painting may seem tight and controlled, but I treat each shape as a painting in itself, painting loosely inside each shape. At that stage, it is an intuitive process where reality and abstraction intermingle. With my series of paintings, “Palmscape”, I have attempted to create curving lines that overlap and repeat themselves in rhythmic sequence with muted colors that fade and reassert themselves harmoniously.

I have been experimenting with collage this past year. Elements from my palm paintings have been simplified, sometimes abstracted or isolated from the larger compositions. The vertical panel format was inspired by Japanese wind walls, or folding screens.
